The Cape Light Compact ("Compact") is now offering a clean renewable energy option called Cape Light Compact Green SM ("Cape Light Green"). The program allows Compact customers to match 50% or 100% of the electricity they use each month with renewable energy sources. The Firm served as project counsel, assisting the Compact in its selection of ConEdison Solutions as the 2005 competitive electric power supplier for the Compact's customers and in negotiating agreements between the Compact and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative ("MTC"), for the Compact to participate in MTC's Clean Energy Choice SM program.
The Cape Light Compact is a regional services organization made up of all 21 towns of Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, and Barnstable and Dukes counties. The purpose of the Compact is to represent and protect consumer interests in a restructured utility industry. As authorized by each town, the Compact operates the regional energy efficiency program and works with the combined buying power of the region's 197,000 electric consumers to negotiate for lower cost electricity and other public benefits.
Currently, Cape Light Green includes a mix of 1% solar, from rooftops across Cape Cod, 24% biomass from Chicopee, Massachusetts and 75% low impact hydroelectric from across New England, as its source of renewable energy. With the Firm's assistance, the Compact was able to participate in MTC's Clean Energy Choice SM program, which will allow participating Compact customers to deduct up to 75% of the premium paid for Cape Light Green from their federal income taxes, if the customer itemizes. The Firm is also assisting the Compact to incorporate wind from land-based projects in Massachusetts, into the Compact's mix of renewable energy.
More information on Cape Light Green is available on the Compact's web site. The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy also has information on Cape Light Green.
